This is Lincoln. He’s a Longwood Highlander, a breed named for the remote section of Los Angeles between Pico and Olympic just east of La Brea. Lo-Highs, as they’re often called, are known for their fear of everything that moves and their tendency to think any succession of percussive sounds is someone knocking on the front door. But don’t let his floppy ears and big brown eyes fool you—he’s actually a lot less threatening than he looks.

This is Weeble. She keeps Lincoln on his best behavior. Warning to those who would attempt to pet her: the belly is off limits.

This is Jack-Jack. A half-pound hamster with the heart of a lion.

This is Zoey. She’s a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. She was born in February 2005, weighs 18 pounds and, like Lincoln, has a “dodgy digestive system” that requires regular medication. Since the breed was developed to warm ladies’ laps in the 16th century, Zoey is happiest when she’s sleeping on someone.

This is Beavis. His digestive system works just fine. Perhaps that’s because he exercises it hourly. When he’s not eating, Beavis enjoys snoozing, sleeping and hibernating.
